Two paths of knowledge

Generally, I specialize.

The promise of specialization is that with investment of effort, one might ascend deeply and advance a given domain to a new limit.

The promise of generalization is with similar investment, one might advance in many directions, leaping from one point to another to make novel connections and spread knowledge more broadly.

The reality of specialization includes the opportunity cost of variety, and tunneled focus of vision and tradition.

The reality of generalization includes loss of footing and identity, the risk of shallow connections or moving on before a return on investment can be realized.

Specialists may build on the work of others.

Generalists may build with it.

Specialists start early and utilize compounding interest of time.

Generalists come late, but bring with them diverse experience and perspective

Both have a role.

Both work.

Both are good.

We get to be both.
